Image: Anderson-Groves: Kenny looking to avenge his defeatBy Scott Gilfoid: Kenny Anderson (16-1, 12 KO’s) will be out for blood on June 30th in his rematch against British super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) at a still to be determined venue in the UK. Anderson was stopped by Groves two years ago in the 6th round in a fight where he had Groves on the deck in the 4th.

Had there been more time in the found, Anderson no doubt would have finished the job by knocking Groves into the stratosphere. But I think the biggest mistake that the hard hitting Anderson made in the fight was fighting too cautiously instead of full speed ahead. The way to beat Groves is how James DeGale did it last year in his questionable 12 round decision loss. DeGale struggled early on, holding back due to the never-ending feints that Groves used during the 12 round bout.

It wasn’t until the 5th round that DeGale finally solved the Groves riddle by going right after him and belting him with big shots. DeGale literally had to chase Groves, because unless he did he’d be standing there watching Groves use feints 24/7 and there would have been no real fight.

When DeGale pressured Groves, he found out that he really didn’t have a lot of power, and he was easy to beat. I had DeGale sweeping rounds five onward, winning the remaining rounds of the fight. Groves was terrible, as was DeGale. However, DeGale was a little less terrible and definitely should have been given the win for that fight.

So if Anderson wants to win this fight, he’s going to have to really take the fight to Groves and give him a whipping like DeGale was doing in the second half. All Anderson has to do is look at how good of a job Degale did, and then basically copy him to punish Groves to take his British trinket. Anderson is the much bigger puncher of the two, and he can definitely win this fight if he pressures Groves nonstop and aims everything to the head. Groves can be hurt and Anderson has got the kind of power to do the job if he fights smart.
