Image: Mike Jones hoping to come back from defeatBy Dan Ambrose: #1 IBF welterweight contender Mikes Jones (26-1, 19 KO’s) failed last Saturday night when he was brutally knocked out in the 11th round by the hard hitting Randall Bailey (43-7, 37 KO’s) in their fight for the vacant IBF welterweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jones looked bad throughout the fight, putting boxing fans to sleep with cautious fighting style and constant movement. The sad thing is all that movement and cautiousness still didn’t keep Jones from getting knocked cold by a huge right uppercut from Bailey in the 11th round. The shot was like a cannon and it immediately sent Jones crashing to the canvas flat on his back with his eyes closed. The fight was halted after Jones tried to get back to his feet but collapsed on bambi legs.

Jones said to RingTV “He’s got one-punch knockout power, but that’s all he’s got. I said it before the fight. I said that the only chance he’s got of winning the fight is to knock me out.”

Jones blew a possible chance to face the winner of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley bout. Bob Arum, their mutual promoter, was excited about putting together an in house fight between Jones and one of them. Now that idea is going to have to wait a little while longer until Jones gets some important wins under his belt and can show fans he’s not the same fighter that Bailey was flattened. It doesn’t mean much that Jones says that all Bailey could do was knock him out, because that’s exactly what he did.

Bailey really didn’t throw that many punches in the fight, but once he started letting his hands go in the 10th, he immediately knocked Jones down. In the next round, he finished him off. I can’t see the rematch being any different. Jones will do well as long as Bailey doesn’t land anything, but once he connects with anything hard, Jones will likely be flat on his back of face counting stars. Jones is a decent welterweight, but as you can see, his chin is his weakness, and he’s not a very exciting fighter to watch either.
