Image: Ward: A fight with Chad Dawson can and should be madeBy Allan Fox: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward is eager to face WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson next if the fight can be put together, according to Esnewsreporting.com. However, Ward wants Dawson come down to his weight at 168lbs rather than moving up to meet him at 175.

Ward said to esnewsreporting.com “That’s [Dawson-Ward] a fight that can be made and should be made…Chad is a very skilled fighter. He’s a southpaw, but we got to find a way to get it done if he’s the next opponent…He said he would come down to 168, and we get to have a light heavyweight champion and a super middleweight champion going at it.”

This is good news if Ward and Dawson can mix it up, because Ward needs to get busy. He hasn’t fought since taking care of Carl Froch last December, and blew a chance to fight a unification bout against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute by saying that the Romanian fighter has to earn a shot against him rather than facing him right off the bat. In a way, it’s a good thing because if Bute can easily take care of Froch, it’ll make a Ward-Bute fight that much bigger in the near future.

However, Ward still needs a good opponent and he didn’t show any interest in facing his #1 WBC contender Anthony Dirrell. There’s not a lot of other options available for Ward unless he wants to take on Adonis Stevenson, Edwin Rodriguez, James DeGale or George Groves. It’s doubtful that any of those fighters would be eager to jump in the ring to face Ward right now.

Dawson is coming off of a 12 round majority decision win over Bernard Hopkins. Dawson dominated the fight but failed to throw enough punches to make it really easy. For some reason, he just wouldn’t let his hands go and he let Hopkins fight well enough to get a draw on one of the judges’ scorecards.
