British boxing chiefs condemn Haye- Chisora fight

By Dallan O’ Donnell: The governing body in Britain has come out today and condemned the July showdown between former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and Dereck Chisora which will take place in London at Upton Park. They also said that there would be sanctions for anyone who is involved in the fight.

The fight will take place in England despite neither fighter not holding a boxing license. Instead promoter Frank Warren will work through the little known Luxembourg boxing federation. But Warren has inflicted the wrath of almost everyone involved in the sport from writers to the British boxing board of control themselves. Many people are saying that it is the end of British boxing and the board has said that anyone involved does not hold the interests of professional boxing at heart.

Chisora had his license revoked after the outrages scenes in Germany, which showed him slapping heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (who he was set to battle) across the face at the weigh in, spitting in Wladimir Klitschko’s face in the ring before the bout and then brawling with fellow Brit David Haye at the post fight press conference. Totally disgraceful scenes that surely should have meant a lifetime ban for Chisora.

David Haye of course hasn’t held a license since retiring from the sport after being beaten by Wladimir Klitschko last year. Frank Warren has said that he is not trying to undermine the BBBofC but being realistic he is. The fight should never have been made as it does simply damage the integrity of British boxing trying to move forward.

Although this fight will be the biggest heavyweight contest in Britain since Lennox Lewis fought Frank Bruno in 1993, the fight in my opinion is tainted. I for one will not be watching the fight as in the real world it should not be happening. What is your opinion on the fight? Should it have been made?
