Image: Alvarez needs a top level opponent next to be considered for a Mayweather boutBy Dallan O’ Donnell: After beating Shane Mosley last time out, there has been a lot of talk of who would fight WBC super welterweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. If Canelo wants to be in the running for another huge clash, this time against pound for pound King Floyd Mayweather Jr., then he really needs to fight a top level opponent next time.

Paul Williams is the latest name to be mentioned but Canelo would easily beat Williams if they were to fight.

Miguel Cotto was another name of potential opponents but realistically it is too much of a risk for both men. There have been some early reports that Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefar had offered the fight to Cotto but no story materialized.

The only name that really appealed to me was James Kirkland. Kirkland is a decent fighter and he is a big name. Pundits would have it as a close contest but for me there is only one winner and that is Canelo.

Lots of people underestimate him, he is raw, he is still learning the trade but he is a class act. He is the future of boxing. James Kirkland was once thought of in that regard, but some personal life issues and a shock knockout loss to a lesser opponent put his future in doubt.

Alvarez would have too much for Kirkland, but it is the type of fight that would springboard him into a mega clash with Mayweather.
Former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz also said he would like the Canelo bout. Ortiz fights Andre Berto next. Both are big named fighters and that might be another avenue Canelo might like to ponder over.

Who do you think Canelo should fight next? Cotto, Williams, Kirkland, or the Ortiz-Berto winner? Or are there any other fighters that would make Canelo fight? Tell me on Twitter @dallan09
