Image: Marquez vs. Fedchenko mismatch tonight on HBOBy Chris Williams: If your interested in seeing a pair of likely huge mismatches tonight on HBO and have an extra $44.95 laying doing nothing then you might want to purchase the HBO per-per-view card between Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Sergio Fedchenko and Brandon Rios vs. Richard Abril fights. It should be interesting if you like Marquez pound on a guy who probably has no business being in the same ring with him.

Marquez has the skills, the experience and the power. Fedchenko has the youth and that’s about it. It’s a mismatch. I’m still trying to figure out why Fedchenko, #5 WBO, is being given the shot against Marquez for the interim WBO light welterweight title. I mean, Mike Alvarado, who will be fighting on the same card tonight against Mauricio Herrera, is ranked #3 WBO. It would seem to me that Alvarado would be a much better choice than to be putting in the light hitting Fedchenko for the fight.

I don’t see there being any real logic in making this fight other than giving Marquez an easy interim title without having to face a live opponent. Fedchenko has already been exposed by Kaizer Mabuza, his only top tier opponent. That’s enough for me to dismiss this guy completely as a worthy challenger. Mabuza had Fedchenko hurt in the 1st round of their fight and should have finished him off had been able to put his punches together a little better.

Why Marquez wants to waste his time on collecting a needless interim strap is beyond me. He’s probably not going to fight for the full title against WBO champ Tim Bradley, so he shouldn’t even waste his time fighting for the title. If he’s just collecting paper titles like Manny Pacquiao, then I guess it’s okay, but why? No will care after Marquez beats Fedchenko because they see it as a mismatch.
