Image: Fury looks to prove himself against Rogan tonightBy Sean McDaniel After back to back mediocre performances against less than world class opposition, undefeated Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s) will be back in the ring against arguably an even weaker foe than the last two opponents in 40-year-old Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s) in a 12 round fight for the vacant Irish heavyweight title in Northern Ireland.

Fury sees this as the fight of all fights that will finally prove that he’s worthy of being put in with one of the Klitschko brothers. Fury gave up his British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles rather than face David Price. If Fury wanted to prove himself that was the fight right there that he needed to take. He didn’t and now we’ve got Fury reversing gears to face Rogan, who lost two out of his last four fights. Good choice for Fury if he wants to look good for a change because he looked like a mixed bag in his last two fights.

For Fury, the key to victory is for him to stay on the outside and try the best he can to establish a jab to keep the hard hitting Rogan from getting in range to land anything. Hopefully Fury has been working on his jab, because he mostly paws with it and can’t seem to keep any of his opponents away with this weapon. This is why you often see Fury fighting in close, throwing short uppercuts, because his jab is so ineffective and seems to forget to use it for long stretches. He can probably get away with not using it tonight, because Rogan will probably run out of gas by the 6th and swell up to the point where the fight will need to be stopped by the 7th.

Fury can beat fighters in the class of Rogan using poor form but you’d to see Fury showing skills in defeating these 2nd tier fighters because he’s going to need to have a lot of things to work with when he eventually gets put in with a fighter that has a pulse and isn’t dragged into the ring from the 2nd tier to fight Fury.

Rogan will be looking to land one of his big right hands on the jaw of Fury. He won’t have to look too hard, because Fury will be there for him to land his shots as long as Rogan fights with a lot of intensity. Rogan has the better power, but he’ll have to get inside to use it.
