Krasniqi doesn’t have the power to test Cleverly

Image: Krasniqi doesn't have the power to test CleverlyBy Scott Gilfoid: I like how WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly’s promoter was able to convince the World Boxing Organization to accept the light hitting Robin Krasniqi (37-2, 13 KO’s) as the 25-year-old Cleverly’s next opponent for April 28th instead of the much more dangerous hard hitting #1 mandatory challenger Dmitry Sukhotsky.

That was a real good one for Cleverly, because it probably saved him a knockout loss against Sukhotsky. But the way it is now, Cleverly gets a fighter in Krasniqi, who has zero power and zero experience against top tier opposition. In other words, Cleverly has another soft touch on his hands like his last three opponents. But with Cleverly, though, his defense is so poor that even fringe contenders like Tony Bellew are able to go life and death with him.

I don’t know what to really get excited about with the Krasniqi-Cleverly fight. I know they placed it at the Royal Albert Hall in London, but I don’t care a fig about that. I don’t know anyone who would. People don’t care nonsense like that. I guess you have to be one of those rare types that are into the nostalgia nonsense. People are too busy making a living to care about venues. What they care about is seeing exciting fights that are competitively matched, and this isn’t one of them.

If I was Cleverly’s promoter, I’d be embarrassed to put this fight together. I’d put him in with the best and see how does. If he’s not good enough to stand in with Sukhotsky, then I’d rather know it early in his career than to find out later. I wouldn’t be talking up a fight between Cleverly and 47-year-old Bernard Hopkins if I knew that Hopkins was about to get beat by Chad Dawson. I’d be mute on that, because this isn’t five to ten years ago. Hopkins would need to be a lot younger to have a chance against Dawson, and I don’t think even a prime Hopkins could touch Dawson. Since it seems pretty obvious that Hopkins is going to lose to Dawson, I wouldn’t even be mentioning him.
