Image: How will Pacquiao neutralize Bradley’s head-butts?By John F. McKenna (McJack): When Filipino icon World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO’s) engages WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (28-0-1 NC, 12 KO’s) on June 9 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas what will Team Pacquiao resort to in an effort to neutralize the unintentional head butts of Bradley?

“Desert Storm” as Bradley’s fans refer to him is known for doing whatever it takes to be victorious in the ring, including the use of elbows and an unintentional head butt or two. It is a given that Pacquiao and his camp will be on the lookout for any illegal activity on the part of Bradley in the ring which may jeopardize Manny’s WBO title.

No one goes as far to say that Timothy’s head butting is intentional, but it (the head butting) happens in nearly every fight that he is engaged in. And for a fighter who is coming off of a serious cut in his last fight as Pacquiao did in the Marquez fight it is a foregone conclusion that Team Pacquiao will be on the lookout for the head butts.

The problem is that “Desert Storm” is so good at what he does that he has very rarely been called out by the referee or even his opponents for the head butting or the use of his elbows. This is not to say that the head butts are not indeed unintentional, but the fact remains that it happens in almost all of Bradley’s fights. It is so common that many boxing observers now refer to “Desert Storm” as the “Billy Goat”.

So how do you prepare for the head butts you know are coming? Top Rank and its CEO Bob Arum carry a lot of clout. It is safe to say that any referee who is chosen to work the Pacquiao – Bradley fight will be on the lookout for the head butts. It was clear in the fight last July between David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko that the referee had been pre-warned in advance to be on the lookout for Wladimir’s habit of pushing down on an opponent when at close range. Wlad was even penalized at one point in the fight for pushing down.

It is probable that Team Pacquiao has a better idea and that is of using Manny’s blazing speed and power to hurt Bradley when he comes within range. Trainer Freddie Roach will be utilizing sparring partners in camp who most closely emulate Bradley’s style.

Rusian Provodnikov (21-0, 14 KO’s) will be flown in all the way from Siberia to spar with Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao will be out this time to restore himself in the eyes of boxing fans around the world who were disappointed with his sub par performance against Juan Manuel Marquez last November. “Pacman” is a very proud man and even with his newly found commitment to God, he wants as a fighter to erase the memory of last
