Froch-Bute: Will Carl retire if he loses?

By Scott Gilfoid: I’m just kind of curious about what Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KO’s) will do if he gets spanked by IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (30-0, 24 KO’s) next month on May 26th.I mean, Froch has probably got to retire if he gets whipped again like he did against WBA super middleweight talent Andre Ward.

Think about it. Froch will have been beaten by Ward, beaten but given a very, very, very controversial decision over Andre Dirrell, defeated by Mikkel Kessler and then blown out by Bute. What else is there for Froch after that?

I think Froch would have a hard time stomaching being a gatekeeper or a trial horse for the contenders to rip apart for practice while climbing the rankings. I honestly don’t know what else Froch could do if he gets smacked around by Bute next month. All the belts are currently taken. Froch isn’t going to aim himself at trying to get a rematch against WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Ward, because that won’t happen.

Froch won’t get the fight and even if he could, he’d just lose again, and probably even worse than last time. Froch could go after the WBO paper champion Robert Stieglitz, but that won’t work because Stieglitz fights out of Germany, meaning Froch would have to probably KO the guy to get a win. He’s not going to stop a fighter like Stieglitz. He might beat him but he won’t get the decision, so why bother?

Froch should maybe think about hanging up the old gloves if he gets spanked by Bute. I don’t know. Maybe Froch could go after one of those interim jobs and just hang onto one of those weird semi-titles for ages just for kicks. Don’t know why anyone would want one, but Froch could at least one of those straps in the absence of being able to pick up a real belt. It’s certainly an option, isn’t it? Take the interim strap and defend for as long as possible.
