Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez in September

By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has reportedly signed a commitment to face former World Boxing Council middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in September this year provided that Chavez Jr. gets by Andy Lee on June 16th in a still to be determined venue in Texas.

Martinez already signed his portion of the same commitment document long ago, and he had his fingers crossed that Chavez Jr. would sign to make the fight a reality.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Chavez Jr. first can get by Lee, and second whether or not he’ll honor the commitment to face Martinez. You have to imagine that the commitment only means something if Chavez Jr. is still in possession of the WBC 160 pound strap. Once he no longer has title, then he doesn’t have to face Martinez and suffer the likely knockout loss.

Chavez Jr. could vacate his WBC title rather than face Martinez, something that a lot of boxing fans think Chavez Jr. will ultimately do or he can lose his title against Lee on June 16th. This is also a very real possibility because Lee is so much better than anyone that Chavez Jr. has been matched against thus far.

If Chavez Jr. decides to vacate his WBC title rather than to face Martinez, he’ll lose a lot of fans. However, he’s got a lot of casual boxing fans who don’t follow the sport in an everyday manner and many of them would likely not even be aware if Chavez Jr. decides to vacate his WBC title rather than take the risky fight against Martinez.
