Image: Beristain worried about Marquez's speed for Fedchenko bout on SaturdayBy Allan Fox: According to the record.com.mx, Nacho Beristain, the trainer for former three division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KO’s), is concerned about his punching speed and the preciseness of his shots for his fight next Saturday night against Sergiy Fedchenko (30-1, 13 KO’s) for the interim WBO light welterweight title at the New Mexico City Arena, in Mexico City, Mexico.

Beristain was also worried about Marquez’s speed problems before his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2009, so hopefully we’re not going to see a repeat of that fight where Marquez was completely dominated by the much faster, and more accurate Mayweather.

The good news for Beristand and Marquez is that the 30-year-old Fedchenko really isn’t all that fast of hand or foot. He’s got hand speed that is far slower than Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather. If Marquez was able to deal with Pacquiao’s speed with no problems, then he should be more than okay against bthe much slower Fedchenko on Saturday night.

Another issue that Beristain is worried about is Fedchenko’s Eastern European fighting style. This isn’t a style that Marquez has had much experience in facing, as he’s never fought a fighter from the Eastern bloc in the past. Most of the opponents that Marquez has fought during his career have been from Mexico, and have come right at him looking to slug it out.

Fedchenko is much different, because he won’t be coming forward like that and will be quick to retreat if and when Marquez is on the attack looking to slug. Fedchenko likes to retreat, and his offense is pretty limited to probing jabs, short left hooks and right hands. He’s not someone that will over-commit to a punch in the way that most of Marquez’s opponents do. Fedchenko hates getting hit and will avoid it all costs.
