Abraham’s trainer thinks he has to fight better to win the WBO title

By Allan Fox: Arthur Abraham soundly defeated Piotr Wilczewski by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night to set the 32-year-old Abraham up with a shot against the winner of the WBO title fight between champion Robert Stieglitz and George Groves. Abraham’s trainer Ulli Wegner wasn’t satisfied with Abraham’s performance against Wilczewski and believes he has to fight a lot better to capture the World Boxing Organization title.

Wegner told the Bild.de “Clearly, he controlled his opponent. But against someone better than him [Wilczewski], he’s got more work to do. I’m happy that he won. But to to win a world title, he must do more.”

Abraham does need to do a lot more to win a world title, because he showed the same mistakes in this fight that he did in his three loses in the Super Six tournament. For prolonged stretches in the fight, Abraham would go to the ropes and cover up in his turtle defense and just wait for incoming fire to try and block the shot. What it appears is Abraham needs long rest breaks and this is only way he can recover without exerting himself.

It’s a bad way of resting because it lets the other guy tee off on him for long periods of time. This is how Abraham gave away rounds against the likes of Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell and Carl Froch in the Super Six tournament. What Abraham needs to do is use circular movement in the ring when looking to get a rest break. That’s the best way to do it, because he’s not giving away rounds when he does that. However, Abraham moves slowly and it looks like it takes a lot of energy out of him to even circle the ring. He may not be able to rest enough when circling, which is probably the reason why he just covers up with his turtle defense on the ropes. This puts Abraham in a situation where he’ll need to make the most of the time where he’s on the attack, because he’ll given away the majority of the rounds by just covering up. Stieglitz and/or Groves will make a killing against a fighter like Abraham that covers up so much. They punch a lot better than Wilczewski and they’ll make their shots count.
