Image: Saul Alvarez needs to fight with some urgency against MosleyBy Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) needs to take it out of 1st gear against 40-year-old Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO’s) on May 5th to impress boxing fans and to show he’s for real and not just an emotionless fighter that beats the fodder that his promotional company throw in the ring for him to look good against. Alvarez still hasn’t faced a quality fighter despite having held the WBC title for a year now.

It’s hard to believe that Alvarez has won the WBC title and defended it on three separate occasions, and yet still hasn’t fought a good opponent. Although Golden Boy Promotions, his promoter, aren’t saying it, it seems that Alvarez is still being brought along like a contender, not a champion. That’s the problem. He now holds the WBC title, but he’s not being matched against the top 15 contenders like James Kirkland, Vanes Martirosyan, Erislandy Lara, Delvin Rodriguez and Alfredo Angulo. Instead, he’s being put in with guys like Ryan Rhodes, Alonso Gomez, Kermit Cintron and now 40-year-old Shane Mosley. It’s nice how the World Boxing Council has given Mosley a #3 ranking in the WBC rankings, because he was nowhere to be found in the top 15 when the Alvarez-Mosley fight was signed. Now he’s all the way up to #3, but hasn’t won a fight in over three years. How does a fighter get ranked at number #3 by the WBC when they haven’t won a fight in three years? That’s laughable.

Alvarez hopefully will fight with some urgency on May 5th, even if Mosley is just standing in front of him all night long unable to pull the trigger with any consistency like he was unable to in his fights in the past three years.
