Image: Hopkins vs. Dawson II winner could face Cleverly for his WBO title in the summerBy Scott Gilfoid: The winner of the April 28th fight between Chad Dawson and WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins has the option of facing WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly this summer in a unification match. The catch here is that the Hopkins-Dawson winner will likely have to be willing to fly all the way to Wales to fight Cleverly in his home country in front of a ton of Brits where it might be very difficult to win a decision over Cleverly.

Cleverly’s promoter Frank Warren is interested in getting the Hopkins-Dawson winner over the Wales for what would likely be a big fight with a lot of fans. It wouldn’t be big in terms of the U.S, because it would be a real yawner in the States due to no one knowing who the heck Cleverly is. But it would be an important fight to the Brits at least.

Here’s the deal, though: Dawson will end up beating the 47-year-old Hopkins no problems on 4/28, and he’s not going to be even remotely interested in flying all the ay to the UK to fight a non-popular light heavyweight like Cleverly in front of his home fans. Dawson has already been burned once in his career in his loss to Jean Pascal when the referee pulled the plug on the fight in the 11th round when Dawson had Pascal badly hurt. The referee stopped it after Dawson sustained a cut and never allowed the fight to continue for Dawson to get to his corner to see if they could stop the bleeding.

Both Hopkins and Dawson will easily beat Cleverly and expose him as a paper champion. The same thing would likely happen if Cleverly were to finally face his mandatory challenger Dimitry Sukhotsky if Cleverly would actually fight him instead of being maneuvered around him to fight the likes of Tommy Karpency, Tony Bellew and Robin Krasniqi.
