Image: Groves vs. Anderson II next Friday on 3/16By William Mackay: British super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) will be facing his mandatory challenger Kenny Anderson (15-1, 11 KO’s) next Friday in a little needed rematch at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, in London, United Kingdom. It’s one of those fights where a guy takes on someone he already beat in order to try and show that he’s improved enough to where it’s no longer even a competitive fight.

Groves, 23, beat the 29-year-old Anderson by a 6th round TKO in November 2010 in a fight where Groves was knocked to the canvas in the 3rd round. He got up and was able to eventually score a stoppage, but he took some heavy shots in the fight. It’s unclear what is hoped to be gained from the rematch. Anderson will no doubt land some big shots next Friday and it’s probably not going to be any more one-sided than it was last time the two guys fought. If you take away the knockdown, Groves handled Anderson pretty well.

Sure, he got hit with some big shots every now and then, but that’s to be expected against a big puncher like Anderson. Groves doesn’t have the power needed to just run over guys, so he’s going to have to take some punishment in order to get his wins. He does a lot of circling the ring and uses a lot of feints, but he still has to come at his opponents to land his own shots. That’s when Groves is vulnerable because he’s not really a strong puncher. He did stoppage Paul Smith in the 2nd round in his last fight last November, but Groves isn’t that kind of puncher. He just caught Smith with a big shot that he didn’t see coming and was able to take him out. If he tries to duplicate that effort against Anderson next Friday night then it could badly for Groves.
