Image: Froch to challenge Bute on May 26th in NottinghamBy Scott Gilfoid: Well, former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KO’s) really stepped in it this time with his decision to fight the talented IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (30-0, 24 KO’s) on May 26th at the Capital FM Arena, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, UK. Froch is taking this fight off of a thrashing from American WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward last December in the Super Six tournament.

It’s clearly a major blunder on Froch’s part to have accepted the fight with the 31-year-old Bute rather than a winnable fight given how badly Froch was spanked by Ward. But I guess Froch doesn’t want to do things the conventional way and is going to stubbornly plow ahead into an almost certain defeat. How dumb is that?

On the positive side, the 34-year-old Froch will be fighting for the first time in Nottingham since winning a highly controversial 12 round split decision over Andre Dirrell in that venue. If that fight is anything like what we’ll be seeing on May 26th, then I really feel for Bute because he may get tossed around a little and not have a referee to save him. I sure hope Froch doesn’t start fouling like he did in the Dirrell fight because he was really roughing Dirrell up, body slamming him, rabbit punching him and holding and hitting. The referee just stood there and did nothing. Yeah, the fight was in Nottingham and hopefully we don’t see another fight like that one. There’s going to be a huge spotlight on the bout, and I think we may see a good clean fight because no one wants to see Froch roughing up talented guy like Bute for 12 rounds and getting away with it. I had Froch fouling out of the Dirrell fight due to all the various fouls he committed but then again I’m the referee. But even without the fouls being called, I had Dirrell beating Froch by an 8 rounds to 3 with 1 even score. It wasn’t even close.

I can’t help thinking how stupid it is for Froch to fight Bute coming off of a loss. It’s one thing being brave and confident, but this just looks like arrogance and stupidity at work. You got to realistic about things. Besides it not being a good match-up for Froch, he needs a lot of time to work on all the things he did wrong in the Ward fight. Going straight into a tough against Bute is pure lunacy. The Bute fight is a HUGE risk for Froch’s career and he’s not in a good position to win this fight. You don’t want to take risks like this coming off a one-sided loss like the one Froch suffered against Ward. Froch needs to leave Bute for Ward and the Dirrell brothers. Those are the Ferrari’s of the super middleweight division. You can’t take a slow Ford and throw him in with Bute. It just won’t work.
