Brook-Hatton: Big Brother is being watched

Image: Brook-Hatton: Big Brother is being watchedBy Jonathan Watkins: Kell Brook has confessed a bewildering build up to his welterweight clash with Matthew Hatton; he’s been watching videos of his brother Ricky.

The Yorkshire boxer justified his preparation by stating that he was watching Matthew’s older brother due to him being the better fighter.

“I don’t normally watch tapes of my opponents, but for this fight I’ve been watching his older brother Ricky actually” he told Sky Sports’ Ringside.

While he probably hasn’t spent too long watching the former World Champion’s bouts it seems a peculiar strategy considering the two are quite different fighters, especially in ability.

Brook may be favourite for the forthcoming encounter, but scoring a convincing knockout win could be difficult considering Matthew’s history in the ring. His recent stand against big-hitting Saul Alvarez in particular signified Hatton defiance to go down in battle, and Brook seems aware the size of the task at hand.

“I definitely think it’s my toughest fight. It’s been on the horizon for many years now. He was an undefeated European champion; he’s boxed for a world title at light middleweight against someone they’re saying is up there as the best pound-for-pound in Alvarez” he admitted.

Matthew’s performances in the ring don’t quite match up to his brothers brawling success, however he has somewhat managed to step out of his brothers shadow with some impressive victories and title captures.

Brook will likely be the victor if the bout goes to the judges, but evidently his tougher task will be defeating his opponent before the final bell, a feat that those before him have failed to achieve.

Watching Ricky’s defeats will be unlikely to help the undefeated fighter’s chance as he’s not quite boasting the same talents of Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao yet.

Instead studying moments where Alvarez could have stepped it up that extra bit in order to stop Matthew would be a wise option. Despite inflicting damage throughout the Mexican couldn’t quite force the former European Champion to quit, something Brook can do, given the right preparation and an impressive performance.
