Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Malignaggi, lost the purse bid to Senchenko’s promotional team. This means that the fight will likely take place in Ukraine, and that’s not where Malignaggi was hoping to fight. He wanted the fight to take place in the U.S. to attract more interest and make more money off of the fight.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told RingTV “We have sent Paulie the contract, and we are waiting to see what his decision is going to be.”

Malignaggi is concerned about how much money will be left for him after Golden Boy gets their cut of what might not be a very larger offer. If the money isn’t to Malignaggi’s liking, he’ll opt not to take the fight. He apparently has invested a lot of his career earnings and doesn’t need boxing anymore to survive unlike a lot of fighters.

Malignaggi, #2 WBA, #8 WBO, #9 WBC, #9 IBF, will eventually get a title shot against one of the other welterweight champions. He might be better off not taking the fight against Senchenko in order to keep his rankings and look for other stay busy fights until he eventually gets a good paying offer from one of the other world champions.

Malignaggi can pretty much forget a fight against WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. or WBO champion Manny Pacquiao. Those guys aren’t going to fight Malignaggi unless he gets one or two big wins under his belt against top welterweight contenders like Victor Ortiz or Kell Brook.

However, the chances of Malignaggi taking a risky fight to get a title shot against one of the big stars are pretty slim. Malignaggi will probably continue to play it safe like he’s been doing and look to fight a 2nd tier fighter in the next few months if he doesn’t go for the Senchenko fight. In his last three fights, Malignaggi has beaten Michael Lozada, Jose Miguel Cotto and Orlando Lora.
