Even at 40, Winky Wright is still likely too good for Peter Quillin

Image: Even at 40, Winky Wright is still likely too good for Peter QuillinBy Eric Thomas: There’s talk of former junior middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-5-1, 25 KO’s) facing unbeaten middleweight contender Peter Quillin (26-0, 20 KO’s) on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Miguel Cotto fight on May 5th.

I think it’s a good fight to help bring some additional fans to the fight and sell some more fights on pay per view. I do think it’s a very dangerous fight for Quillin, though, because he’s still fighting like a novice at this point in his seven year pro career and Winky Wright is so much more advanced in terms of technical skills.

Quillin has advanced much under the tutelage of his well known trainer Freddie Roach, and still can’t fight on the inside, still can’t throw a jab with any power and still has no power with his left hand shots. Quillin doesn’t throw a lot of combinations and seems to load up with right hands all the time. He’s just a right handed pot shot fighter who has yet to fight a skilled opponent.

Wright will be the skilled opponent if this fight gets signed and I can see Quillin getting embarrassed in this fight. Wright may not have fought for ages having been out of the ring since a one-sided 12 round decision loss to Paul Williams in 2009, but he still has an excellent jab that he can use to control the fight against Quillin.

The only way I can see this fight going well for Quillin is if Wright has deteriorated to the point where he can’t even jab anymore. If that’s the case then Quillin will easily beat him, but I doubt he’s forgotten how to jab and it’s not something that will take a lot of energy out of him. Wright can literally throw jabs all night long and give Quillin a boxing lesson much in the same way that Wright did with Felix Trinidad in the past.

I think it’s a mistake to match Quillin with Wright, I really do. Roach still hasn’t taught Quillin how to fight and he’s so badly flawed right now that even Wright at 40 will make Quillin look like an amateur. I don’t know what the problem is with Quillin not picking up any skills under Roach’s training. Maybe Roach hasn’t had enough time with him or something because Quillin should have long ironed out his many flaws, but he hasn’t. He’s still the same one-armed fighter he was when he turned pro in 2005. Quillin might want to consider looking for a different trainer that can work harder on fixing Quillin’s inability to fight on the inside and help with learning how to use his left hand and to start throwing combinations instead of those useless right hand pot shots that he depends on to win his fights against mediocre opposition.
