Image: Peterson's trainer: Khan blames everyone but himself for his lossBy William Mackay: Barry Hunter, the trainer for IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) and one of the U.S Olympic coaches, is unhappy with the way that Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) has conducted himself since his loss to Peterson in December last year.

Hunter feels that Khan has blamed everyone but himself for his loss and is pointing fingers instead of taking responsibility for his own failings in the ring on that night.

Hunter told thesun.co.uk “Khan blames everyone and everything for his poor performance and lack of ability to make adjustments in the ring for his loss. It would be an understatement to characterize Lamont as being disappointed in the unprofessional manner in which Khan is attempting to discredit his performance in the ring and victory. Real champions don’t continue to come up with various excuses and false accusations in hopes that something will stick to cover up for a loss.”

Hunter says that he and Peterson met with Golden Boy Promotions, Khan and the sanctioning commissions after the fight to discuss the scoring of the fight. Hunter says that the meeting concluded with everyone being satisfied with the scorecards being accurate indicating that Peterson had indeed won the fight. Hunter said he turned down a rematch offer made days after the fight because he and Peterson wanted time to rest, think about the victory and decide where to go from there. However, Hunter says Golden Boy then began to file protest letters and trying to shape opinion about the fight in the media.

Hunter wants what’s best for his fighter and isn’t going to just automatically agree to a rematch with Khan if there’s a better deal out there for Peterson such as a fight against Manny Pacquiao. It makes sense. Why take a fight against Khan that will pay in the neighborhood of $1 million when Peterson has a chance of getting a lot more than that in a fight against Pacquiao.

Khan and his team obviously want the rematch quickly because they can try and undo the damage from poor performance and then move forward to try and get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. But they’re not going to be able to force their agenda on Peterson and Hunter just because its’ good for them.
