Peterson should give Khan his rematch – but in Washington, DC

Image: Peterson should give Khan his rematch - but in Washington, DCBy Scott Gilfoid: Ever since he lost his IBF and WBA light welterweight titles to Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) last month on December 10th, Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) has been bellyaching nonstop about how he thinks he was ripped off by the judges and the referee in Washington, DC.

Peterson, a guy that doesn’t believe in making excuses for losses, has been disappointed that Khan hasn’t given any credit for having schooled him with his vastly superior inside game. Khan doesn’t give Peterson any credit and says he kept fouling Peterson all night because Peterson was coming in with his head.

Khan and Golden Boy Promotions are trying to overturn the results of the fight with an expensive appeal to the IBF and WBA, which will rule on the appeal later this month on January 18th. Khan wants a rematch outside of Washington, DC in what he calls a “neutral venue.” I think just because of all the crying that Khan has done and how he’s failed to acknowledge how good Peterson was on that night, Peterson should offer Khan the rematch that he so badly wants but only Washington, DC. It’s only fair, right?

When you’re the king, and Peterson is definitely the king now in the light welterweight division with the IBF and WBA belts, you get to fight wherever you want to fight. So if Peterson wants to fight Khan again in DC, then Khan needs to decide whether he wants the fight badly enough to fight Peterson over there. After all, beggars can’t be choosy, can they? Look, Khan is flapping his gums about how he deserves the match and all, so he shouldn’t care where it happens as long as it does happen?

I think we have a failure on Khan’s part to recognize that he’s no longer the King Khan but rather than just another challenger looking to win some belts. Khan isn’t calling the shots anymore even though he’s backed by Golden Boy. Peterson is the man, so if Khan wants the belts, then he needs to shut his yap and agree to whatever venue that Peterson offers him, including Washington, DC.

If I’m Peterson, I’d tell Khan to take it or leave it. Either he agree to fight in Washington, DC like a good one, or he needs to go peddle his requests for a fight somewhere else like with Erik Morales or Timothy Bradley. My advice is for Khan not to hold his breath waiting for those fights to happen either. I think Khan needs to grovel a little and be humble.
