Image: Berto: I have a secret strategy to beat OrtizBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO’s) revealed last night on ESPN2 that he has a secret strategy that involved doing something different in his rematch with Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO’s) on February 11th to come out on top in their HBO fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Berto said “I’ve got a secret strategy I’m going to use to beat him. I can’t say what it is.”

If you look at what Berto did last time out it’s not too hard to guess what he’ll be doing differently to try and get the win in the rematch. Last time Berto fought Ortiz, he went right at him and tried to slug it out. He allowed Ortiz to fight him in close and he also made the mistake of retreating to the ropes to try and fight with his back against the ropes.

Berto did a fair job when he had the action in the center of the ring because he wasn’t getting hit nearly as much. However, Berto’s legs weren’t able to carry him around because of the constant pressure he was getting from Ortiz and he was forced to go to the ropes.

I think Berto will probably try and keep the action at a distance and focus on keeping off the ropes as much as possible. I don’t think it’s going to work out as well as Berto things it will, because Ortiz was able to fight remarkably well in the center of the ring as well using his jabs and lead left hands to tag Berto. It seemed like Berto did a better job when he was at medium range because he was able to land some explosive shots, but Ortiz had no problems taking his power and returning fire.
