Image: Wladimir still set to face 39-year-old Mormeck in mismatch on SaturdayBy Jason Kim: Despite being hospitalized and treated for a painful kidney stone this past week, IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) will still be taking on 39-year-old undersized fringe contender Jean Marco Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) in a nice little mismatch on Saturday night at the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.

There hasn’t been any word from Klitschko about wanting to cancel the fight, and it’s easy to see why. This is an incredibly easy fight for Wladimir, as he can win it using just jab if he wants to. Wladimir really doesn’t have to do much to beat the short and aging Mormeck, because he’s got so many ways to win this fight.

Mormeck has looked like a shadow of himself since moving up to the heavyweight division in 2009, and has struggled to beat three second tier heavyweights. The sanctioning bodies have been very generous to Mormeck, giving him a ranking of #9 IBF, #9 WBA, and #9 WBO.

It’s difficult to agree to that inflated ranking because Mormeck is nowhere near as good as Chris Arreola, who the World Boxing Association shockingly has Mormeck above Arreola in the rankings. I suppose in a mixed upside down world you could see Mormeck being above Arreola, but it doesn’t make sense.

Wladimir had a great fight in his last bout against David Haye last July in which Wladimir almost pitched a shutout in winning a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision. Haye couldn’t do a thing with Wladimir’s reach and athleticism. That’s why it was hoped that Wladimir would face another quality fighter in his next fight, but instead he’s dug deep to find Mormeck for this mismatch on Saturday.
