Image: Margarito wants third fight with Cotto in MexicoBy Dan Ambrose: Having just lost to WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto by a ringside doctor’s stoppage at the start of the 10th round last Saturday night, Antonio Margarito reportedly wants to fight Cotto for a third time to prove who the best fighter is between the two of them, only this time the fight should take place in Mexico instead of the United States.

Margarito bent over backwards to accommodate Cotto by agreeing to fight him in New York this last time out, which effectively was the equivalent of a home fight for Cotto. The fight, however, ended badly when the ringside doctor decided to stop the fight because Margarito’s right eye had swollen almost shut.

The doctor wanted to protect Margarito, but he didn’t need protecting because Margarito was giving Cotto all kinds of problems in the 9th round. By stopping the fight, the doctor prevented boxing fans from seeing what would have happened in the last three rounds.

A rematch in Mexico sounds like a great idea, and I must commend Margarito for mentioning this. It’s the only way to truly find out who the better fighter is between them, because I can’t see a doctor jumping in the ring in Mexico to put a stop to the fight because of a little swelling.

Margarito would be able to fight to the death if he wanted to and he would be a nightmare for Cotto if allowed to fight until his last breath.

Margarito is a warrior and deserved the chance to show that last Saturday night, but he was prevented by the doctor’s stoppage.

Cotto ran all night long against Margarito, holding and fighting like he was trying to run out the clock every round instead of looking to win. It was disappointing to watch because of how the fight was built up by the two teams. Cotto acted as if he was going to punish Margarito in the ring, but instead he ran and held.

And then when Margarito began to wear him down and give him problems, the doctor stepped in and called a halt to the fight before Margarito could try and KO Cotto in the last three rounds. It was a very, very sad ending for Margarito, Cotto and for all the boxing fans that had paid $54.95 to watch this tainted fight on pay per view. The only thing I say is there needs to be a rematch in Mexico so everything is even.
