Matthysse, ranked #3 WBC, #4 WBO, missed out on a fight for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight title last month against Erik Morales on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was a golden opportunity for Matthysse to pick up an easy belt and he missed the chance when he got sick before the fight. Now, Matthysse will have to settle for just a tune-up opponent, who will likely be a lower level contender or 2nd tier fighter. It’s a lot of wasted time for the 29-year-old Matthysse.

Matthysse wants to fight in the United States in his fight after that, and presumably that fight will be against a top contender. If Erik Morales chooses to vacate the WBC title after Morales moves down in weight to take on the winner of the Jorge Linares vs. Antonio DeMarco this Saturday for the vacant WBC lightweight title.

Matthysse would then be facing the number #1 WBC light welterweight contender Ajose Olusegun for the vacant title. Matthysse isn’t the type of fighter that throws a lot of punches and he could have problems against a busy fighter like Olusegun unless he can take him out with body shots the way he wore DeMarcus Corley out last January in an 8 knockdown, 8th round TKO win.
