Image: Donaire vs. Narvaez tonight in a huge mismatchBy Chris Williams: Photo: Sumio Yamada – WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) will dip into the super flyweight division to defend his title against 36-year-old Omar Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KO’s) at the MSG-WaMu theater in New York, New York.

Donaire, 5’7″, will easily over the much smaller 5’3″ Narvaez. Donaire usually does well against really short fighters, especially ones without any head movement like Narvaez. Donaire did struggle badly against the 5’4″ Rafael Concepcion two years ago in a 12 round decision win in 2009, but Concepcion used head movement and in and out attacks to give Donaire fits.

Plus, Concepcion had excellent power with his right hand and staggered Donaire in the 2nd round with a scorching right hand to the head. Once Donaire tasted Concepcion’s power, he didn’t want anymore and ran for the rest of the fight. That’s what Narvaez needs to do if he wants to win.

The problem is Narvaez is a lot slower than Concepcion and much weaker. He’s a lesser a fighter than the Panamanian Concepcion in my eyes. Narvaez may be unbeaten, but he hasn’t ever faced anyone yet that you can get excited about. Without the head movement or any kind of power, Narvaez is going to get slaughtered tonight.

Bob Arum, Donaire’s promoter at Top Rank, wants to slowly turn Donaire into a star. It’s sad that all this time has been wasted in his career. Arum wants to move Donaire up in weight to the super bantamweight division after this fight to take on Toshiaki Nishioka, the WBC champion. That fight won’t do much in winning fans for Donaire because no one knows who Nishioka is in the United States and won’t likely give a fit that Donaire can beat this guy. I think it’s a stupid fight.

Donaire needs to skip that fight, and maybe shoot for a fight against Jorge Arce. Other than that, if Arum is really serious about wanting to make a star out of Donaire then he needs to quickly move Donaire up to the featherweight division next year and put him in with Juan Manuel Lopez or Yuriorkis Gamboa. It’s better sooner rather than later that Arum does this, because I don’t see Donaire as someone that will have a long shelf life.

Donaire needs to be used as fast as possible before he starts spoiling. He’s already been pretty much wasted for the past four years since beating Vic Darchinyan in 2007. It’s time Arum takes the training wheels off of Donaire puts him into hyper drive with his career. I think Arum takes things way too slowly sometimes and misses putting together fights when they need to be made.
