Image: Adrien Broner vs. Vincente Martin Rodriguez for vacant WBO super featherweight strap on November 26thBy Scott Gilfoid: The old WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns has decided to move up in weight rather than face the talented Adrien Broner (21-0, 17 KO’s) on November 26th and likely take a royal beating.

So, instead of whipping Burns beyond recognition, Broner will have to settle for the number #6 ranked World Boxing Organization challenger Vicente Martin Rodriguez (34-2-1, 19 KO’s) for the vacant WBO super featherweight strap on November 2th at the Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s all the same whether it’s Burns or Rodriguez. Neither fighter is anywhere close to being as good as Broner.

This is anti-climatic to say the least. Broner is way too good for the 26-year-old Rodriguez and this fight promises to be one-sided for as long as it lasts. Rodriguez seems to have a decent chin, and will probably be able to take 12 rounds of punishment. However, he’s going to lose every round and look silly.

The WBO needs to get with it and start ranking their fighters a lot better because Rodriguez is someone that I don’t think has any business fighting for a title against an incredible fighter like Broner. This fight is going to be sickeningly one-sided, but then again so would have a Broner-Burns fight.

Here’s how I see it going down: Rodriguez is about as slow as they come. He’s going to plod forward and take severe punishment round after round. Given that the fight is being held in the U.S, I can see the referee stepping in at some point and halting the fight when it becomes too one-sided, which will be after a couple of rounds. I don’t think Rodriguez will hit the deck, because his chin is solid. But with Broner throwing flurries, it’s going to be imperative for the referee to do his job and stop the fight to prevent Rodriguez from absorbing too much of a beating.
