Image: DeGale wants the winner of Kessler-StieglitzBy Scott Gilfoid: Not wanting to be limited fighting for useless domestic titles against British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves, James DeGale (10-1, 8 KO’s) says he wants to fight the winner of the November 5th match between World Boxing Organization (WBO) super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz and former two time super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler.

DeGale first must defeat his opponent this Saturday night, European Boxing Union (EBU) super middleweight champion Piotr Wilczewski (29-1, 10 KO’s), who DeGale will be fighting at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, England. DeGale, 25, is a heavy favorite to win that fight because of his superior talent.

The plan was for Groves to destroy Wilczewski and then fight Groves in a rematch to avenge the controversial 12 round decision loss DeGale suffered last May. However, DeGale isn’t being limited to those narrow confines and is thinking much bigger in terms of world honors and he’s not going to sit back and waste his career fighting for domestic level titles over and over again. There’s no gain in fighting for those lower belts. The real honor and respect will come when DeGale captures a world title and there’s no better place to start then with the Kessler vs. Stieglitz winner.

DeGale said “There’s a great world title next month between Mikkel Kessler and Robert Stieglitz and I’d fancy the winner of that.”

I agree. That’s where DeGale needs to be looking, not in the direction of titles and a fighter that he should have been given the decision against. I honestly wouldn’t waste my time fighting Groves again until he’s DeGale’s mandatory challenger once DeGale is the world champion. There’s no point in going backwards. DeGale rightfully should have been given the decision in their fight and I think it’s useless to waste time fighting Groves again until he’s DeGale’s mandatory challenger, which will likely never happen.
