Image: Calzaghe wants Maccarinelli to pick up a British title then face CleverlyBy William Mackay: Former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe’s father Enzo Calzaghe is training former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli, who is hoping to make a go of it at light heavyweight after suffering his fourth knockout loss in the past three years.

Instead of focusing on learning how to fight on the outside using his jab, the 6’4″ Maccarinelli has decided to slim down to 175 to fight at light heavyweight in a move that is almost destined for failure. Joe Calzaghe is interested in seeing Maccarinelli fight for a title against WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly in the near future.

However, Maccarinelli needs a couple of good wins under him for boxing fans to believe that he’s a good candidate to fight for a title against Cleverly.

Speaking with the BBC Sport, Calzaghe said “I’ve seen him train and he looks impressive. My dad’s got him in great shape. I’ve seen him on the pads. But the public wants to see what he’s got in the ring. he should fight for a British title, destroy somebody and look good at the weight and then maybe take on Cleverly.”

That would be a good idea but I could see Maccarinelli having problems even winning a domestic level title. If you put him in with a banger like Tony Bellew, we could see Maccarinelli getting knocked out again and brutally. What Maccarinelli needs is to learn how to fight at a distance and use his jab. He has a bad habit of fighting on the inside and that really hurts him.
