Image: Roach: Pacquiao will be scientific against MarquezBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach is creating a different picture for the third fight between his fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12th.

Instead of Pacquiao going straight at Marquez like he foolishly attempted to do in their first two fights in 2004 and 2008, Roach is saying Pacquiao will use a different strategy for this fight one that Roach calls “Scientific.” It sounds like Roach is trying throw Marquez off to how Pacquiao will really be fighting and that’s by slugging as usual. That’s what Pacquiao does and really the only thing he’s good at. He’s no boxer.

“We’re ‘[Pacquiao] not going to walk into his punch, Roach said to the Philippine Star. “We will be more scientific in this fight. In the first two fights, we got careless trying to land one big shot.”

If Roach isn’t trying to confuse Marquez with useless strategy talk, he’s deluded. There will be nothing remotely scientific about Pacquiao’s game plan for the Marquez fight, because he’ll come out like he always does just plowing ahead trying to out-punch Marquez the way he does with everyone.

If Pacquiao does follow a scientific fight plan, he’ll just end up looking stupid by not throwing enough punches and end up getting outworked by Marquez. The thing with Pacquiao is he throws his fight strategy out the window when he gets hit hard and usually responds by immediately attacking his opponents to try and pay them back. This is why Marquez made Pacquiao look bad. He had a little bull in front of him in their two past fights and Pacquiao wasn’t thinking beyond the primitive level in those fights. He just wanted to KO Marquez.

Against Marquez, you have to be smart and not just a wild-eyed puncher like Pacquiao. Like I said, if Roach is serious about Pacquiao fighting in a scientific manner, it probably still won’t work because he’ll simply think too much and not throw enough punches. For Pacquiao to really win this time instead getting a gift draw or a controversial decision, Pacquiao has got to hit and hold to limit Marquez’s ability to fire back. I would say that Pacquiao has to use a lot of movement, but his legs don’t seem to work like they used to. He’ll just end up getting leg cramps if he tries to move like he did a few years ago, and then it will be even easier for Marquez to whip him.
