Khan wants Maidana to fight Bradley before he’ll consider giving him a rematch

Image: Khan wants Maidana to fight Bradley before he'll consider giving him a rematchBy William Mackay: Instead of recognizing that WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana is by far a much better option than facing Lamont Peterson next or taking on guys like Paul McCloskey, IBF/WBO light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) will be facing the light hitting Peterson next. Peterson doesn’t have the following that Maidana does, and the fight is pretty more of the same from Khan – another weak puncher.

Khan said this on his twitter today: “Maidana just wants a payday. Good luck to him. Bradley should fight him for the WBA. I’d love to see that…A lot of you want to see the Maidana rematch. Yes, it was a cracking fight. I enjoyed watching it too. It could happen. Let’s see him fight Bradley.”

Maidana was quick to respond on his own twitter account, saying “The last thing I’d accept from a boxer [Khan] who runs from others is telling me whom I have to fight.”

As for Maidana, Khan wants him to fight WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley and prove himself against him before he’ll consider fighting him. Khan hasn’t fought Bradley either, which it kind of a silly request. Khan should have instead picked out someone that he previously fought rather than a guy that’s mired in legal problems like Bradley is right now. It basically puts Maidana in an impossible situation because Bradley won’t fight him. So it’s like Khan telling Maidana – ‘No thanks! I’m not interested in fighting you. Now get lost.’

I seriously doubt Khan would fight Maidana even if he destroyed Bradley. There would likely be another hurdle put in front of Maidana, and then another until eventually he gets beaten. Once he loses, Khan will have the excuse needed never to fight him. It’s kind of like with Breidis Prescott, the fighter that knocked Khan out in one round. Instead of trying to avenge the defeat, Khan used the excuse that Prescott was beaten by Miguel Vazquez and Kevin Mitchell not to fight him. Maidana just thinks Khan is scared to fight him again after just barely escaping with a 12 round decision last December. A lot of boxing fans think Khan is afraid as well. Khan would have problems in a rematch with Maidana, especially if the referee didn’t keep pulling Maidana off of Khan like the referee that worked the Khan-Maidana fight did.
