Image: DeGale vs. Wilczewski: James the shining light on the Bellew-Cleverly cardBy Scott Gilfoid: The only thing I can see that is any good about the October 15th fight card headed by the Nathan Cleverly vs. Tony Bellew bout is the undercard fight between James DeGale (10-1, 8 KO’s and EBU super middleweight champion Piotr Wilczewski (29-1, 10 KO’s) at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, England.

Did I tell you how much I hate the Cleverly-Bellew fight? It makes me ill just thinking about it. I can’t stand mismatches like this. Bellew stands no chance.

Cleverly may be the WBO light heavyweight champion, but he’s nowhere near the best of the four champions in the division. DeGale, though, is someone that will soon be at or near the best in the super middleweight division. He’s got the talent to be the top guy in a year or two, but he’s got to get through these lower level fights like his bout against Wilczewski first. DeGale is a lot better than this, but his promoter wants to take things slowly with him and build up incrementally before putting him into a world title situation.

You can expect another fight against George Groves after DeGale makes easy work of Wilczewski. It’s a logical fight for DeGale. After all, he was on the receiving end of a questionable decision. He’ll take on Groves again, but it may have to be a situation where Groves is pulled into the fight kicking and screaming because he seems to want no part of a rematch against DeGale for some reason.

Could it be that the element of surprise is no longer there for Groves, is that why? He used a new fighting style in his fight with DeGale in which Groves ran around the ring inside engaging like he used to. It was a brilliant strategy because Groves would have been destroyed had he stood and fought DeGale. We saw how weak Groves was compared to DeGale each time Groves would stop and try to fight DeGale one on one. DeGale was blasting him with big shots and making it look easy. Groves then had to get back on his bike and continue running just to escape with a controversial decision.

DeGale will be the special one on this card. I think Wilczewski is a decent 2nd tier fighter, but I don’t think he deserves to be ranked where he is at number #2 by the WBO. Wilczewski is going to get embarrassed by DeGale on October 15th and it’s not going to be a close fight.
