Image: Dana White: Referee Cortez destroyed the Mayweather-Ortiz fightBy Chris Williams: UFC president Dana White was disgusted with how referee Joe Cortez lost control of last Saturday night’s mega match up between WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas, Nevada.

White thinks the action should have been stopped after Mayweather was hurt from a headbutt and a doctor should have been brought into examine Mayweather’s mouth injury to determine the seriousness of it.

Speaking with ESPN, White said “The referee [Joe Cortez] destroyed that fight. It’s easy to hate Floyd Mayweather, but Floyd didn’t do anything. He didn’t act like a thug. Floyd gets flagrantly head-butted in the face and the ref actually lets (Ortiz) walk up and grab him again after he does it,” White said, referring to the hug. (Cortez) never takes control. He never sends in a doctor to make sure Floyd is OK. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”

White thinks referee Cortez should have stepped in during the 1st round when Ortiz first started the headbutting business. White saw that as a failure on Cortez’s part to do something about Ortiz’s headbutting early before it got way out of hand like it did in the 4th round when Ortiz jumped into Mayweather head first and tagged him with a hard headbutt to Mayweather’s face. With as much money that was on the line for this fight, White was repulsed by the lack of control that the referee exhibited in the fight.

It wasn’t one of the finest moments in boxing that’s for sure. Mayweather showed incredible ability and was well on his way to stopping Ortiz when things turned sour in the 4th when Ortiz decided to play dirty by headbutting Mayweather. It seemed painfully obvious that Ortiz was looking for an easy way out because he was getting embarrassed by Mayweather.
