Sergio Martinez – The Schoolyard Bully…

Image: Sergio Martinez – The Schoolyard Bully…By Lee Demain: Current World Boxing Council (WBC) Diamond Middleweight champion and #2 pound for pound fighter Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez is really struggling for any decent world class challengers of late, dubbed the new Paul Williams because no one will touch him and because of the fear factor generated through recent performances, Maravilla has been calling out all the ‘big’ names, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito (Martinez wants the winner of their second installment) and the big cash cows Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

It’s understandable Martinez wants the big fights, the big paydays and of course the number 1 P4P spot, and he deserves them after his recent performances most notably knocking out the ‘most avoided fighter in boxing’ Paul Williams in sickening fashion.

When you look at Martinez he looks big, he’s got a great physique, he’s cut and most of all has bags of power in that left hand, but all I hear and read is Martinez want’s Pacman, Martinez wants Floyd and the best of all ‘If Cotto has any balls he’ll fight me next’, like I said the big names and fights, but not once has he mentioned Lucian Bute, Froch, Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell in the talent packed super middleweight division, Martinez keeps looking to the smaller men in the welterweight and light middleweight classes, I’ve not even heard him mention Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Cornelius Bundradge or any of the other names in the light middleweight division.

When you look at the weight he operates at he’s at 160 and I keep hearing he’s a small Middleweight…he doesn’t look small to me, I’ve also heard he could still make 147 for a fight with Pacman, who is he kidding? Why can’t he fight Carl Froch at 168 or better still a catchweight of 165? If Pacman can engineer catchweights then so can Martinez. Lou Dibella (Martinez’ promoter) recently came out saying 168 was out of his reach and ,again, he was a small middleweight, when asked about possible fights with any of the big super middles he called people ‘idiots’? saying he’d get overpowered at 168, how does he think Pacquiao achieved the things he has? By beating up smaller men? Stepping DOWN in weight? Or stepping up fighting anyone they put in front of him and blowing them away, that’s how, Martinez loves to call out the smaller big names but won’t even mention the big names at 168, it’s the action of a schoolyard bully, picking on the little guy and when the bigger guys come along, not opening your mouth, I have no doubt Martinez is a great fighter, and he’s very dangerous, but if he wants real respect and recognition, and the number 1 spot in the P4P rankings, he needs to step up in weight and beat the big names.
