Image: Martirosyan vs. Wolak a possibility for December 3By Dan Ambrose: Despite his recent impressive 1st round stoppage of Joseph Gomez last week, junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KO’s) isn’t being matched against unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (30-0, 19 KO’s).

With no apparent interest from Angulo’s promoters in an immediate fight, Martirosyan, ranked #1 WBC, #2 WBO, #3 IBF, is turning his attention to junior middleweight slugger Pawel Wolak (29-1-1, 19 KO’s) for a fight that could take place on December 3rd. The fight makes a lot of sense for Martirosyan, as the 29-year-old Wolak is currently ranked #3 WBA, #3 WBO, #4 WBC, #9 IBF.

This is a good fight to pick off a highly ranked fighter and to stay busy while waiting for a fight against Angulo and/or a title shot against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez. Wolak has a busy style where he likes to throw massive amounts of punches while pressuring his opponents. Wolak has good power and would make for an interesting fight for Martirosyan. However, Wolak doesn’t do well against boxers, and Martirosyan has excellent boxing skills to go along with his impressive power. It’s a bad style match-up for Wolak because Martirosyan is a lot better than the guy that Wolak just finished fighting to a 10 round draw against, Delvin Rodriguez.

Wolak wouldn’t be able to pressure without eating a lot of jabs and power shots from Martirosyan. The movement alone will give Wolak fits, but when you add in Martirosyan excellent jab and power shots, it’s going to be very tough for Wolak to win this fight. Martirosyan isn’t a weak puncher like former WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman, who Wolak stopped in the 6th round in March. Martirosyan is a bigger puncher than Wolak and can do a lot of things that he can’t. It looks like a mismatch to me. However, this is a good warm-up fight to get ready for Angulo, if his Golden Boy promoters are willing to chance him against Martirosyan.
