Lemieux training with Sergio Martinez

By Eric Thomas: 22-year-old middleweight contender David Lemieux (25-1, 24 KO’s) is back in training after suffering a humiliating 7th round TKO loss to top contender Marco Antonio Rubio last April.

Lemieux, currently ranked #4 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), is in training with former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in Oxnard, California.

Lemieux previously trained for all his fights in his home country of Canada, but it looks like he’s decided that he needs to make some drastic changes after his stoppage loss to Rubio.

Lemieux doesn’t have an opponent that he’s training for as of yet, but just wants to learn and improve with help from Martinez.

Lemieux still believes he’s got what it takes to become a champion in the future, but he knows he’s got to learn to pace himself more and stop looking to knock everyone out.

One of the mistakes that Lemieux made in the Rubio fight was he went all out in the first five rounds trying to take him out. Perhaps Lemieux thought he could easily take out Rubio the same way he had rolled over his previous 24 opponents.

Whatever the case, he didn’t pace himself during the first part of the fight. In the 6th, Rubio badly hurt Lemieux with a big right hand to the head.

In the following round, Rubio finished Lemieux off with a series of hard shots that had Lemieux out on his feet at the time his corner threw in the towel.

Lemieux showed good power in that fight but his chin and his stamina just doesn’t seem suited for his style of fighting. He’s going to need to make some changes because he won’t last long if he continues to try and knock everyone out.

There are harder punchers than him in the division and he’s going to have to learn how to defend himself better if he wants to make it to the next level.
