By Craig Daly: David Lemieux and David Benavidez both weighed in at 166 1/4 lbs on Friday at their weigh-in for Saturday’s battle for the WBC interim super middleweight title at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Showtime Championship Boxing will be televising the Benavidez vs. Lemieux card at 10:00 p.m. ET.

#1 WBC Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) and #2 Lemieux (43-4, 36 KOs) are expected to be an old-fashioned slugfest with both fighters throwing nonstop power shots, looking to score a knockout.

The 15-year professional Lemieux has tasted defeat against these fighters: Billy Joe Saunders, Gennadiy Golovkin, Joachim Alcine, and Marco Antonio Rubio.

It’s been five years since Lemieux lost his last fight against Saunders in 2017, but his opponents have been less than stellar in winning his last five contests.

The best of the bunch that Lemieux has beaten recently is Gary O’Sullivan, who he destroyed in a first-round knockout in 2018. Unfortunately, Lemieux hasn’t fought anyone of note since that fight, but that was how his promoters chose to match him.

It’s gotten him to this point, but it might not help him on Saturday night when he gets inside the ring with the dangerous puncher Benavidez.

Benavidez is hoping to shine with an early knockout of Lemieux and then use the victory to set up a big fight with Caleb Plant or Jermall Charlo.

“I never look past a fight, but there are big fights that I’ve been chasing for a long time. I’m taking care of Benavidez, and then we’ll see what happens,” said David Lemieux to Fight Hub TV.

“I’m sure he’s seen everything I do. My style isn’t particular to anyone else’s style, but he’s seen power, he’s seen speed,” said David Benavidez to Fight Hub TV about his opponent Lemieux.

“We have a good game plan for this fight. We’ve studied everything he does, the good things he does and the bad things he does. We’re extremely prepared.

“I know he has a big left hook and punching power. So I’m prepared for everything he does too. I don’t think he does anything different from what he’s seen, but he’s never been in the ring with me and the power I do stuff.

“It’s going to be a great fight, I’m excited, and I can’t wait to give the fans a great fight. I already have my game plan set, and I know the type of stuff that I’m going to have to do.

“If he tries to back off a bit, we’re going to cut the ring off and try and put him in the corner. We got a couple of things lined up. We’ve got a couple of different game plans.

“If he wants to stay in there and trade, we’ll trade. If he wants to try and run around the ring, we’ll cut the ring off. It’s definitely going to be a good fight,” said Benavidez about his battle against Lemieux.
