Klitschko vs. Adamek: Vitali looking good in training

By Dan Ambrose: With a little over a month to go before his September 10th bout in Poland, WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s) is looking in superb shape for his bout against Polish challenger Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) at the Stadion Miejski, Wroclaw, Poland.

Vitali, 40, is six years older than the 34-year-old Adamek but oddly enough, Vitali looks like the more youthful fighter. I guess he’s just lucky to have aged well. He’s not just looking younger, Vitali is fighting like the younger guy as well, and is much lighter on his feet than the smaller, slower Adamek.

Adamek is ranked #1 by the WBC, but he’s not likely going to do well against the much bigger 6’7″ Vitali. Adamek’s rise in the rankings have mirrored that of David Haye in that Adamek has faced mostly older heavyweights in the 2nd tier instead of contenders. He did beat Chris Arreola last year, but that win wasn’t impressive because Arreola hurt his left hand early in the fight and had to chase Adamek around the ring for 12 rounds.

Arreola staggered Adamek on several occasions and I’d give him a good chance of beating Adamek if not injured. Other than the Arreola fight, these are the guys that Adamek has fought to land the Vitali fight: Michael Grant (38), Vinny Maddalone (36), Andrew Golota (42), Kevin McBride (38) and Jason Estrada. That’s not exactly going through a gauntlet of tough opponents is it.

Adamek looks like he’s taken it easy to get this money fight and is going to be in way over his head in this one. He looks good in his training photographs but it’s probably not going to help him because he’s not looked impressive even against the mediocre oppositions he’s faced.
