Froch-Ward: Will Carl be disqualified for fouling when the going gets tough?

Image: Froch-Ward: Will Carl be disqualified for fouling when the going gets tough?By Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) shot a cannon across the bow recently when he mentioned that if his October 29th opponent WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) head butts him in their Super Six tournament fight that Froch would return fire by head butting him to get revenge.

Froch hinted that he could lose it and make a real mess of the fight in terms of fouling. This is bad. I think this translates into Froch possibly looking for the easy way out when things are looking rather dire for him. God, I hope I’m wrong. I’d hate to see Froch getting totally schooled by Ward, and then resorting to head butting, throwing him around, holding and hitting or laying into him with rabbit punches to get disqualified rather than facing his beating like a man.

Evander Holyfield once said, “Fear causes people to take the easy way out.” I think he’s right. I’ve seen fighters aplenty take the easy way out of situations rather than facing the humiliation, shame and pain of getting whipped. I just pray that it’s not Froch who resorts to this level.

Picture Froch getting totally dominated by Ward, kind of like how Froch was getting dominated by the talented Andre Dirrell in the first half of their fight in 2009, and then Froch gets it in his head to start fouling. He sure as heck can upset the whole flow of the fight if he starts throwing Ward around like a rag doll.

Froch may be slow of hand and foot, but I do agree that he’s as strong as ox. If grabs you, he can make it rough if he wants to. I hope the referee is on his J-O-B and gets ready to start penalizing early. He’s got to nip the fouling in the bud before things get really out of hand. I’m not sure if penalization’s will stop the fouling, because if I guy has his mind made up that he wants to toss you around, he’s going to do what he wants. I just hope he can regain control of his senses if he starts fouling.

I don’t want Froch to get thrown out of this fight just because he went ape after getting hit with an accidental head butt from Ward. He’s got to realize that sometimes Ward’s head may accidentally tag him in the grape, and vice versa. But Ward isn’t going to try and pay Froch back if he gets fouled. Ward is a professional and will see it for what it is – an accident.

Trying to repay Froch for an an accidental foul would be stupid, and Ward knows this. That’s why I just hope Froch doesn’t lose it and start fouling like no tomorrow if he gets hit low or if Ward’s head tags him. If Froch starts fouling left and right while in the process of being totally dominated by Ward, I would have to see it as a cry for help, a sign that Froch was looking for the easy way out. Please, Froch, don’t lose it, man. Keep it together, and go out on your shield like a good one.
