Still no word from Haye whether he’ll fight Vitali or retire

By William Mackay: There hasn’t been a peep out of former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) since shortly after he was beaten by IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko on July 2nd. Haye had said that he would be making a decision on his future in a week after that fight and would be letting the media know whether he’ll fight again or retire on his 31st birthday on October 13th.

Haye said that he wants to fight a rematch with Wladimir, and that he put off his retirement to make that fight happen. However, Wladimir has made it perfectly clear that he has no interest in going over old ground by fighting Haye in his next fight. Wladimir seems to be open to a possible rematch with Haye, but he wants to face the winner of Tyson Fury vs. Dereck Chisora first.

If the Wladimir-Haye rematches does happen, Haye is going to have to put off his retirement a lot longer than one or two months. It’s probably not realistic for a Haye vs. Wladimir rematch to occur any earlier than April 2012. And it’s unclear whether Wladimir will take this fight, because his older brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko figures it’s his turn to fight Haye. Vitali said he let Wladimir fight Haye and now he wants to fight him.

Haye isn’t interested at all in facing Vitali, but if Wladimir gives Vitali the green light to face Haye, it could leave Haye little choice but to fight Vitali or turn his back on a payday of what would likely be close to $10 million. That’s a lot of money for someone to walk away from and you’d have to wonder whether Haye is afraid of Vitali if he were to not take that fight for the kind of cash that would be on the line.
