Tarver needs to clean up the cruiserweight division

By Dan Ambrose: Antonio Tarver (29-6, 20 KO’s) got a career resurgence with a 9th round stoppage victory over IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green (31-4, 27 KO’s) on Wednesday night at the Entertainment Centre, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The win now puts Tarver in the position where he can fight the other top fighters in the cruiserweight division like Marco Huck, Steven Cunningham, Guillermo Jones, Denis Lebedev, Yoan Pablo Hernandez, and Krzysztof Wlodarczyk.

The way that Tarver fought against Green, he would do well against any of those fighters. However, the most important names out of that bunch are Huck, Lebedev and Cunningham. Those three are considered to be the best of the bunch by boxing fans.

Tarver is now 42, so he’s got to move quickly if he’s going to be going after some of the top fighters. He can’t afford to wait around a year or more and hope to get by those guys. There’s no telling whether Tarver will age to the point where he’s no longer able to dominate. Once you get past 40, things can change rapidly.

A fight against 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins is also an option for Tarver, but not nearly as appealing because Tarver was soundly beaten by Hopkins in a lopsided 12 round decision five years ago in 2006. Hopkins isn’t the same fighter he was back then, but he’s still got enough left to likely give Tarver a problems if he was able to fight him on the inside like he did in the last fight. Tarver needs to stay far away from Hopkins if he wants to continue his success.
