Khan will not fill Hatton’s shoes; He’s not good enough

By Dallan O’ Donnell: In recent news this week, World Boxing Association Super World light welterweight champion (WBA) Amir Khan claimed that he will fill the shoes of recently retired light-welterweight great Ricky Hatton. He wants to draw the kind of crowd Hatton did to America from Britain for his super fights but there is a huge difference.

Hatton had huge likeability factor where unfortunately Khan has none. He is simply not a likeable person the way Ricky was. Khan also lacks a major broadcaster in the UK having left SKY to join little known primetime. And the last reason that Khan will not fill the hitmans shoes is: he is just not good enough. Khan has talent and speed but not enough to mix it at world level for as long as Hatton. Khan’s next opponent is Zab Judah.

A talented new Yorker who has been around the block and faced incredible opponents the likes of Kostya Tszyu, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather to name a few. He may have come up short against them all and aside from The Kostya fight (Where Zab was knocked out in the second) he gave them a real fight and at times looked as though he could have won. Judah is getting on now and although he hasn’t lost his ring knowledge or his trademark speed Khan obviously fancies his chances.

But Khan is already overlooking Judah and he is making a plan for world dominance which is somewhat laughable. Beat Judah and he could face Erik Morales. Simply shocking. Morales in his prime wouldn’t have looked at Khan twice but at this stage would probably be beaten. Then there are talks of Robert Guerrero and then a move to welterweight to possibly face Kell Brook and then ultimately a showdown with Floyd Mayweather. He is a dreamer.

Guerrero would be a step too far for Khan I could see him knocking Khan out with his power and skills. To talk of Mayweather is also ludicrous. Mayweather is far too talented for Khan and would probably end his career. At one stage I was a huge Khan fan. But somewhere along the line he lost his way and turned his back on his fans. He could have had the huge fan base he talks about, if only he had a better marketing and PR staff.
