Khan: I want Mayweather in England in 2012

Image: Khan: I want Mayweather in England in 2012By Sean McDaniel: WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khan is continuing with his talk of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year in 2012. Khan has been talking nonstop about his desire to fight Mayweather Jr. next year, and sees the fight as proof that he’s arrived as a fighter and one of the best in the entire world.

Khan wants the fight in the UK rather than the United States, and thinks it will sell out Wembley stadium. Khan also said he plans on retiring in four more years when he turns 28. It sounds very much like David Haye and his wish to get out of the sport at 31. It’s going to be interesting to see if Khan will follow through with his retirement talk and if he’s going to end up disgraced in the near future like Haye was.

Khan apparently has been assured that Mayweather wants the fight.

“If I beat Floyd Mayweather I’ll be one of the greatest champions in England,” Khan said to the BBC. “If Mayweather beats [Victor] Ortiz, the next fight will probably be against me.”

Khan is overlooking a couple of things. One, Mayweather is talking about wanting to fight Manny Pacquiao next, not Khan. The second problem is Khan is facing IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah on July 23, and he presents the toughest fight of Khan’s career. Judah is better than the guys that Khan has been matched against thus far and we could see Judah walking away the winner of this fight.

The Khan fight is the lesser money bout for Mayweather compared to a fight against Pacquiao. It’s difficult to see Mayweather turning his back on a big money fight against Pacquiao after beating the southpaw Ortiz. That fight is the perfect set up for a bout against Pacquiao, because both Pacquiao and Ortiz are southpaws. For Mayweather to fight the tall Khan, who fights orthodox and is not a particularly hard puncher, would be doing things backwards. That’s not a fight that would help Mayweather other than allowing him to get an easy victory over Khan.

It almost seems like Khan is just trying to get a big payday against Mayweather because Khan has been mentioning Mayweather for ages, even when Khan was only a few fights removed from being knocked out in the 1st round by Breidis Prescott. Usually, fighters that believe their good enough to beat so and so, they try to avenge their losses. That’s not what Khan has done. He just moved on, took the 1st round knockout loss to Prescott, and then later started calling out Mayweather. What’s wrong with this picture? I don’t believe in Khan because if he can’t even try and avenge a 1st knockout loss, how are we to buy that he belongs in the same ring with Mayweather? There’s something fishy about Khan’s constant focus on wanting to fight Mayweather.
