Guerrero’s manager hoping a win over Maidana will lead to Mayweather or Khan fights

Image: Guerrero's manager hoping a win over Maidana will lead to Mayweather or Khan fightsBy Eric Thomas: Bob Santos, the manager for lightweight Robert Guerrero, is hoping that if Guerrero can beat WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana next month on August 27th, it will lead to fights against either WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khan or Floyd Mayweather Jr. It sounds a little farfetched to me, because both Khan and Mayweather are interested in taking on other big stars and Guerrero thus far isn’t anywhere close to being a big star.

A win over Maidana will help make a name for Guerrero depending on how well he does against Maidana, but it’s no guarantee that it will lead to a big fight against the likes of Mayweather or Khan.

Guerrero is a good fighter with wins over guys like Joel Casamayor, Michael Katsidis, Vincente Escobedo, Jason Litzau and Malcom Klassen. However, Guerrero was badly schooled by Orlando Salido when Guerrero stepped it up against him and lost badly in a one-sided 12 round decision. Guerrero should beat the likes of Maidana, because he’s very slow and easy to outbox. But Guerrero would be overmatched against Khan or Mayweather if he could even get the fights against those two, which I don’t see happening.

Maidana, 27, could mess things up for Guerrero by getting close with him and punishing him. Maidana is the biggest puncher that Guerrero has been in with and he’s also the biggest fighter as well that Guerrero will have fought. Guerrero does well against smaller guys than him. That’s been one of the big advantages that Guerrero has had at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight. He’s always been the bigger guy. Now, however, he’s moving up to light welterweight and he’s not going to be bigger than Maidana. Indeed, Maidana, 5’9″, is an inch taller than Guerrero with identical reach of 70.”

This means that if Guerrero is going to win this fight he’s going to have to do it in the trenches and it’s not going to be easy as it’s been in the past because Maidana is an excellent inside fighter, unlike most of the guys that Guerrero has been beaten in the past. Guerrero is always the better inside guy. Now, it’s hard to say. If he decides to fight on the inside against Maidana, he’ll be fighting his fight and will no doubt get hit a lot.
