Haye: There is no one else for Wladimir to fight but me

By Sean McDaniel: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye hasn’t given up on the idea of fighting IBF/WBO/WBA heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko again after losing a wide 12 round points decision to the big 6’6” Ukrainian last Saturday night in Germany. Haye had said previously that this could be his last fight if he lost and that he would be retiring in October.

Now, however, Haye is saying he’d like a rematch with Wladimir because Haye doesn’t want to go out on a bad note. Haye and his manager Adam Booth seem to be in disagreement about his October retirement. Booth is saying that Haye is still retiring on October 13th, while Haye is jockeying for a rematch with Wladimir.

In an article at the dailystar.co.uk, Haye said “I don’t know whether he would fight me. He will start messing me around now. They are in control and will have people jumping through hoops…There is no one else for him to fight. If he goes for someone like Alexander Povetkin, he gets fifth of what he would earn from fighting me.”

Booth is saying Haye wouldn’t fight Wladimir again because there would be no “parity” in terms of the money split. But what can you expect. If you lose and don’t have a title you can’t expect parity. It isn’t like Haye has other options out there available to him. He can’t go looking for a paper champion like he did last time when he beat the big and slow Nikolay Valuev in 2009, because all four of the heavyweight titles are now in possession of the Klitschko brothers. This is what it is.

If Haye wants to fight for a title, he’s got to take less the 2nd time around. Wladimir asked Haye if he’d like to fight him again at the end of the press conference. Wladimir may have been just teasing Haye, because Wladimir’s manager Bernd Boente said today that Wladimir won’t be facing Haye next. Boente said that Vitali Klitschko, the WBC heavyweight champion, is interested in facing Haye after Vitali finishes up with Tomasz Adamek. Haye might have to settle for that instead of Wladimir at least for the short term. If Haye can beat Vitali well then he’ll get his rematch with Wladimir in his very next fight. But the chances are poor that Haye will get past Vitali if Haye decides to take the fight.
