Haye: If Wladimir wants another super fight he can fight me

By Sean McDaniel: David Haye really wants a rematch with IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko after getting beaten by him. Haye thinks he can beat Wladimir in a rematch and wants a shot at him. Haye sees Wladimir as not having any big fights out on the horizon that would match the kind of money that he can bring to the table in a rematch.

Speaking with talksport.co.uk, Haye said I’m just hoping he’ll look at the numbers and say he wants to try and knock me out. If he wants another super fight he can fight me. If he wants an easy one, he can fight one of the guys who just goes over for a pay day.”

Haye is going to have to convince Wladimir to take the fight because his manager Bernd Boente said today that there is no interest on Wladimir’s part in facing Haye right now. Boente instead said Vitali Klitschko wants to fight Haye. However, Haye didn’t seem at all interested in talking about wanting to fight Vitali when asked about that in the talksport interview, saying that Vitali doesn’t fight as often as Wladimir does because he’s older. It seemed like a pretty flimsy excuse to me. That fight might be Haye’s best option because his fight with Wladimir was so boring and one-sided, it’s really doubtful that they could sell another fight between them. I’m sure it would sell okay but not to the same levels that it did this time. At least if Haye fought Vitali it would be a different fighter and Haye might be able to convince boxing fans that he would do well against Vitali’s slower style.

Haye said “I gave him one of the hardest fights of his career and I believe I could beat him given the opportunity.”

That was hardly one of Wladimir’s career given that he wasn’t hit a lot by Haye, who was landing in the single digits in every round. Wladimir’s hardest fights were against Samuel Peter in their first fight, Corrie Sanders, Lamon Brewster, Tony Thompson and Ross Puritty. His fight with Haye is far behind those bouts.

Haye blamed his bad performance on a broken toe. In the interview Haye continued to mention the toe as being one of the reasons why he couldn’t do what he wanted to against Wladimir.

“He’s the best fighter on the planet right now,” Haye said. It looks like Haye is being especially nice to Wladimir all of a sudden because he wants to get a rematch. It’s startling how Haye has changed his tune towards him.
