The future of the heavyweight division?

By Darren Munsey: In less than one months time we get the heavyweight fight we have all been waiting for. WBO & IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s)) takes on WBA champion David Haye (25-1, 23 Ko’s)). By the end of 2011 we will have a good idea who the best heavyweight in the world is even if the answer is ‘’a Klitschko’’. The problem I foresee for the heavyweight division is what next?

If Wladimir beats Haye then who or what is left for the Klitschkos? Vitali could fight Haye to rub salt into Haye’s wounds or Wladimir could give Haye a rematch if he wins in controversial circumstances. Either way they will be done with Haye by the end of 2011. So what if Haye wins? If Haye wins there is only one fight left for him and that is to face Vitali. With Haye’s self imposed retirement looming in October, it doesn’t matter if Haye wins, loses or draws with Vitali as he will be done with boxing. All of these scenarios will pan out one way or another by the end of 2011, so what will 2012 bring?

I am confident the Klitschko’s will still be around so if Wladimir defeats Haye all I see are more mundane, boring title defenses against lesser opposition. If Haye beats both Klitschko’s I see the Klitschko’s winning back their vacant titles in their next fights and we are back to scenario 1. You cannot blame the Klitschko’s for this, all they are doing is beating what is put in front of them, the real problem which everybody knows is the lack of depth in the heavyweight division. You can point to the likes of Solis (17-1), Arreloa (32-2), Povetkin (21-0), Helenius (15-0) and Chisora (14-0) as the future of the heavyweight division and I would agree but not until the Klitschko’s have hung up their gloves as in my opinion none are capable of being a Klitschko. The only fighter other than Haye that I can see giving a Klitschko a real test is Adamek (45-1). He fights Vitali in September, I see his speed giving Vitali problems but I suspect Vitali will still be to big and to strong for him to do any real damage.

Sadly, even if Haye beats both Klitschko’s this year I see 2012 being yet another year of mismatches in the heavyweight division dominated by the Klitschko brothers.
