Image: Ortiz is no walk-over; Mayweather must be at the top of his gameBy Dallan O’ Donnell: The upcoming September 17th fight between unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) and ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) has been given the title ‘tune up’ by many of Mayweather’s fans. But the reality is that Ortiz is more dangerous to Floyd than De La Hoya and Hatton were when he fought them.

If the newly crowned WBC welterweight champion comes to the ring with the same intensity that he fought former Champion Andre Berto with Ortiz could well be more than dangerous he may even cause an upset. Ortiz is quick and has power to boot making him a formidable opponent and accepting Mayweather as your first title defence shows he is brave also, although you wouldn’t usually turn down Mayweather’s approach to fight.

He can expect a bumper payday not only does Mayweather destroy fighters he also destroys the box office like him or loath him he is virtually unmissable. It`s wonderful also that Mayweather has returned to the ring. He is still a major player at the top of the Boxing world. There are few events quite like a Mayweather fight and the weeks building up to the fight are entertaining. Hopefully he will move on from his troubled life and settle down; putting legal issues aside to return to the ring is the start of the healing process.

As much as I do like Ortiz and he is a threat to Mayweather I think he will be knocked out come September. Mayweather’s speed, skill and powerful right hands and accurate left hooks will surface and prove to be too much for Ortiz. I predict a knockout between the 8th and 12th rounds. Hopefully we will then see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao next summer if Pacquiao comes through the Juan Manual Marquez test, which I expect him to.
