Image: Mayweather leads by example taking a risky fight against Ortiz rather than an old timerBy Daniel Echevarria: Everyone knows now that September 17 is now the showdown between 34-year-old, six-time undefeated world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus 24-ear-old current WBC world champion Victor Ortiz in a venue near you. Mayweather, for those that don’t know, has been away from the ring for a little over a year and his last fight was against a confused Shane Mosley. However, Mosley did land one good shot in the fight, a mega shot on Floyd’s chin that shook the building that has never been done to Mayweather.

Mayweather had his fans hanging by a thread waiting to hear of a come back to the ring and, yes, there were rumors again of fights against Manny Pacquiao to Paul Spadafora, but none of which came to pass.

Today, Floyd has returned and his choice in an opponent is a young, strong, hungry, and willing champion who has tasted the canvas plenty of times but is still tuff as nails and is 100% willing to take the random blood and urine test.

In an interview at fighthype.com, Mayweather went on record, saying “Yeah, I chose Victor Ortiz. I mean, there’s always excuses when I fight; they say he’s either too small, he’s too slow or he’s too old. I chose Victor Ortiz a young, strong, solid champion and I think he brings excitement to the sport of boxing.”

Floyd went on to say in the same interview: “You know they say I have a hard time with southpaws, but last time I checked I was 41-0, so I don’t think I really have too many problems with orthodox or southpaw.”

So to those of us that compares Mayweather’s choice and Pacquiao’s recent choice in picking Mayweather leftover Mosley, who made the best and more costly choice? Manny did have a choice in his last 3 fights to fight superior and younger opponents but look who he ended up fighting: Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito, and Mosley. So watch how clever Floyd will play this hand. If Floyd does win this fight, and I say if because anything can happen just look at Roy Jones Jr; Mayweather will instantly steal all the shine and glory from Pacquiao. The chips will be stacked so high in favor of Mayweather at the negotiation table in 2012 when Arum and Pacquiao approach Mayweather again for a fight in 2012. But now the stakes are higher because on Monday it was reported that the PPV buys for the Pacquiao vs Mosley fight drew 1.3 million buys. However, Mayweather vs. Mosley still drew in 1.4 million buys which still keeps Floyd on top. And now Mayweather vs. Ortiz is only a few PPV months before Pacquiao’s upcoming match against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Next, Floyd has been gone almost 2 years and he has chosen a young and hungry new champion who has agreed to the random blood and urine test along with Mosley, which raises the stakes because Pacquiao has been fighting old and slow fighters recently. So now if Floyd wins will Pacquiao continue to fight Mayweather’s leftovers as many fans say? Well, if he does Mayweather is a genius because now his next leftovers will be a young up and coming “vicious” contender.
